SUBURBAN COUNTY SUPPORT GROUPS
Free T-cell counts, HIV diagnostic tests, VD screenings and other blood tests are available at We The People's Life Center every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. Staff of Princeton Biomedical Laboratories conducts testing.
Helena Kwa Kwa, MD, an HIV experienced physician, holds one clinic session per week at the Life Center on Tuesday evenings from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, and patients will also be seen at the Lax Center on Thursday evenings, located a few blocks away at 1233 Locust Street.
Also available at the Life Center is a community health nurse from Philadelphia Health Management Corporation holds office hours at the Life Center to provide basic medical evaluation and assistance, including evaluations for TB. The nurse will help you understand symptoms, take health histories, provide health education, help with emergency situations and make referrals. Please see We The People's calendar of events on the last page of this newsletter to get exact times for the community nurse.
Appointments for each of these services are recommended but are not required, and no insurance is required.
P.C.H.A. STD CLINIC
Philadelphia Community Health Alternatives operates a Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic at its offices at 1201 Chestnut Street, in collaboration with the Family Planning Council and Jefferson University Hospital. The clinic provides treatment for the most common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, and also provides routine gynecological care, emergency contraceptives and pregnancy tests, and screening and vaccinating for hepatitis. PA. SPECIAL PHARMACEUTICAL BENEFITS PROGRAM
WTP's Member Services Coordinator, Gwen Starnes and other case managers working at our Life Center can help you qualify for the Pennsylvania Special Pharmaceutical Benefits Program, which provides access to free medications to people living with HIV/AIDS. Individuals whose income is $30,000 per year or less are eligible for the benefits, and family groups receive an allowance of $2,480 per additional family member.
Over 50 prescription drugs commonly used by people living with HIV/AIDS are covered under the program, including some of the new protease inhibitors.
Residents of Pennsylvania with HIV with a Social Security Card and a prescription for the drug, who meet the income requirements noted above, can register for the program and their local welfare office. HIV/AIDS DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Philadelphia Health Department Health Center #2 provides free diagnosis and treatment for HIV/AIDS-related disorders every weekday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Thursday evenings until 8:00 p.m. Payment and insurance coverage is not required. The health center is located at 1720 South Broad Street, and calling 685-1803 can make appointments.
FREE RESPITE CARE (CHILDCARE)
The Circle of Care is making available free respite care (childcare). If you are a caregiver and/or parent with an HIV-infected child, you may be eligible for this free service for four hours, all day, overnight, or during the weekend. DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION FUND
HIV+ people who don't have health insurance may be entitled to free health coverage for their first three doctor visits. Life Center staff can assist you with applying for these benefits and beginning the process of obtaining Medical Assistance coverage. Call 545-6868. Appointments recommended, but not required.
DROP-IN CENTER
We The People operates a daily drop-in program for people living with HIV/AIDS from 10 a.m. to 12 midnight Monday through Friday, and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Activities are frequently scheduled, but at other times you're invited also just to hang around and get to know us, relax before the TV, find out more about living positively with AIDS and HIV. MEMBER SERVICES
We The People's Member Services Coordinator, Gwen Starnes and members of our Positive Voices team assist members in obtaining appropriate medical and social services, relating to case managers and medical providers, and helping members negotiate the sometimes complicated, sometimes unfriendly AIDS services system.
Case managers from other AIDS agencies are also available at the Life Center to help you obtain the social and medical services you need. Check the calendar on the last page for specific days and hours.
Independent AIDS case managers who are able to help you if you are covered by Medical Assistance, also hold office hours at the Life Center. They can help you obtain medical assistance benefits, utilize the AIDS home care waiver program, and obtain medications through the Special Pharmaceuticals Benefits Program.

CASE MANAGEMENT UNIFORM ACCESS PROJECT
To find out about HIV/AIDS case management services or to be connected to a case manager, people living with HIV disease can also utilize the Case Management Uniform Access Project, a program of CHOICE and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. The Access Project is open from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday and is staffed by bilingual (English/Spanish) Access Specialists. All services are free and confidential. SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING
Free, professional and peer substance abuse treatment and counseling is available at We The People's Living Positive Treatment Center for information or to make an appointment please call Anne Capone at 739-5920.
LIFESAVERS HOUSING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
We The People's LifeSavers Housing Assistance Program helps people living with HIV disease find and maintain appropriate housing.
We The People's Life Center is an intake site for applications from people living with HIV/AIDS for support to provide emergency financial assistance to people needing funds for back rent to avert homelessness or eviction, security deposits to obtain housing for homeless people, or to pay utility bills. The maximum grant awarded is $750, which is paid directly to the landlord or Utility Company.
To find out if you are eligible for a Lifesavers grant, contact your case manager or call Lenora Wheeler our Housing Services Coordinator at We The People, 545-6868. Lenora will also take applications on a walk-in basis if possible, but it's best if you make an appointment in advance.
WE THE PEOPLE COMMUNITY MEALS
For people living with HIV and AIDS, the We The People community dinners and lunches are an opportunity to get together, share a nutritious meal and get to know one another better in the spirit of fellowship and mutual support. See the section of this calendar on "Social Activities" for details.
IF YOU EAT, YOU QUALIFY!
Food Share is a program which provides inexpensive food in exchange for a small fee and two hours per month of community service. A participant receives $30-$40 of food for $14 cash or food stamps. For more information, contact Erik Young at the Life Center, 545-6868.

M.A.N.N.A. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
We The People provides daily volunteer delivery of MANNA lunches to residents of center city and South Philadelphia living near our Life Center at Broad and Lombard Streets, and acts as a pick-up site for other MANNA volunteers. POSITIVE VOICES

SERVICES FOR THE DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf offers a variety of services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, including sign language interpreting, prevention education workshops, deaf awareness workshops, and emergency financial assistance to provide equipment to eligible deaf and hard of hearing people with HIV/AIDS. TRANSLATION SERVICES
Asociacion de Puertorriquenos en Marcha, Inc. (APM) offers Spanish/English interpretation and translation services to all Spanish-speaking people living with HIV disease as well as hospitals, clinics and other HIV/AIDS service organizations. INFORMATION AND COUNSELING SERVICES
The Community AIDS Hotline (215-985-AIDS or 1-800-985-AIDS) provides counseling; information on HIV/AIDS transmission, symptoms and treatment; and referrals to HIV testing, HIV/AIDS services, and medical providers. All hotline services are free, confidential/anonymous, and available in English and Spanish. The hotline is open Monday-Thursday, 8am-8pm, Friday, 8am-5pm, Saturday, 9am-1pm, and Sunday, 1pm-4pm.

NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS
Narcotics Anonymous meets weekly at the Life Center, every Monday night at 9:00 p.m.
ONE DAY AT A TIME GAY AND LESBIAN GROUP
One Day At A Time sponsors a support group for gay and lesbian people in recovery every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at 2310 North Broad Street. ActionAIDS RECOVERY GROUP

WOMEN UNITED TOGETHER
One of We The People's newest support groups is a support group for women living with HIV disease and AIDS called "Women United Together." This group, which will be held every Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Life Center, is facilitated by We The People's Anne Capone, and will deal exclusively with issues for women who are dealing with living in a positive way with HIV disease and AIDS.

A support group for HIV+ women and women who may be at high risk, sponsored by Women with Immune Systems Disorders Organizing and Meeting, We The People, and Interim House, a residential substance abuse recovery program for women in Germantown. ST. MARY'S RESPITE CENTER
St. Mary's Respite Center provides respite care for families affected by HIV-related conditions. The Center provides short-term relief for patents and primary caregivers, who are often denied time to provide for their own physical and emotional needs.
Children ages 6 weeks - 5 years may attend the center on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday to be cared for by trained childcare staff.

ECS STARR PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH HIV IN FAMILIES
Episcopal Community Services offers free confidential counseling and support groups for children, adolescents and their caregivers in families affected by HIV/AIDS. STARR (Supportive Therapy for AIDS Affected Relatives) is a psycho-educational program that emphasizes a positive approach to living with HIV/AIDS. Services are available to people of all faith. This month's Member/Staff rap group has been scheduled for every 4th Monday, at 3:00 p.m at The Life Center. This group is designed to be another opportunity for the members of We The People to talk directly to all full-time staff to express their opinions, what they like and dislike at We The People, and suggestions as to how the members, staff and others can contribute to positive change at We The People.

ACTG COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD
ACT UP/Philadelphia is leading an effort to increase PWA/HIV participation in the local community advisory board (CAB) for the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) at the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson University. ACT UP says that the local ACTG CAB "consists mostly of AIDS-related professionals and people who work for the hospitals. People living with HIV/AIDS and activists need to keep an eye on these guys!" We The People's weekly newsletter, fastfax, provides up-to-the-minute information on HIV/AIDS treatments and policy news and is distributed throughout the Delaware Valley. PHILADELPHIA HIV COMMISSION
The Philadelphia HIV Commission is responsible for planning the allocation of over $20 million of Philadelphia city funds and funds awarded to the Delaware Valley region through Title I of the Ryan White CARE Act and by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Its board of directors is 50% people living with HIV/AIDS and other consumers of HIV/AIDS services, and through its various workgroups and subcommittees decisions are made which directly impact on the coordination and quality of HIV/AIDS services. PHILADELPHIA AIDS CONSORTIUM CONSUMER CAUCUS
The Consumer Caucus of the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia AIDS Consortium, which provides HIV/AIDS planning services and funding for HIV/AIDS activities throughout the Delaware Valley region under Title II of the Ryan White CARE Act, encourages participation of other HIV+ people from the five-county Philadelphia area served by the Consortium.
"Our belief is that we, as people living with HIV and AIDS, are our own best spokespeople: we know best what we need. It is the job of the Consumer Caucus to ensure inclusion of people living with HIV and AIDS in the planning process."

PREVENTION POINT
Prevention Point Philadelphia, the city's syringe exchange program, has opened a "Harm Reduction Drop In Center" at 2560 Kensington Avenue, directly across from the Huntingdon stop on the Market-Frankford el.
The drop-in center is a place where drug users and sex industry workers are able to obtain AIDS information and safer sex supplies, bleach kits and other safer injection supplies, participate in support groups, gain information on first aid medical care, drug treatment and other services, and be counseled and tested for HIV. The center also serves as a site for community AIDS education and organizing in one of the city's most underserved areas in terms of HIV/AIDS services. The AIDS Mediation Project of Good Shepherd Neighborhood House offers reconciliation services for disputes involving people with HIV/AIDS a sensitive means of conflict resolution for disputes involving people with HIV/AIDS. Mediators are volunteers who have completed a 24-hour course in mediator certification, and services people with HIV/AIDS who would like to resolve a conflict without calling the police or going to court. "TREATMENT EDUCATION ACTIVISTS COMBATING HIV"
Project Teach -- Treatment Education Activists Combating HIV -- is an eight week training program for people living with HIV/AIDS developed by Philadelphia FIGHT in conjunction with members of We The People. Participants in the project will be trained as peer educators and advocates on treatment and prevention issues.
Project TEACH will cover the basics of HIV disease, how to prevent, treat, manage opportunistic infections, teaching and listening skills, how to find and use HIV/AIDS information, and how to demand better AIDS treatment and access to care.
Project TEACH members will receive a stipend at the end of the training program, and transportation to and from sessions will be provided.

RED CROSS HOME NURSING TRAINING
The American Red Cross offers a series of three-day trainings designed to provide caregivers with the basic skills and knowledge they need to give basic health care to persons with HIV infection and AIDS in a home setting. Course content includes basic HIV information, infection control procedures, nutrition, medications, legal issues, bedside care, loss and grief, and psychological issues for people with AIDS and their caregivers. The course lasts 14 hours over a three-day period, and is free to both individuals and agency representatives. Pre-registration is required.

The Community AIDS Resource center offers a respite care program offering home-based assistance to relieve the primary caregiver responsible for providing day-to-day care of the client or the client's child. Staff members are dedicated to providing home services to HIV/AIDS-affected or infected individuals and their families.
The program also offers time out for caregivers, companion services, accompanying clients to medical appointments, and emergency personal care services while long-term arrangements are made. DRENK MENTAL HEALTH CENTER GROUPS
Drenk Mental Health Center provides a wide range of behavioral health care and social services to people living with HIV/AIDS throughout southern New Jersey. Drenk has recently expanded its continuum of care to include therapeutic counseling for people infected with or affected by HIV disease, providing individual, group and family counseling, art therapy, and psychiatric services. OCEAN COUNTY SPIRITUAL SUPPORT GROUP
A spiritual support group -- "a prayerful, reflective and supportive gathering of people infected with HIV/AIDS in southern Ocean County" -- now meets on Wednesday of every month from 7:00 to 8:300 p.m. at St. Francis Center, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brent Beach N.J. There is also a support group for those family members and loved ones affected by HIV/AIDS from 7:30 -9:00 on the 2nd and 4th Thursday's of each month. Ample parking is available. "OUR PLACE" DROP IN CENTER
